Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum, has said that a major inquiry will be conducted to determine the cause of the hazardous amount of methanol in gasoline imported into the country.

He made the announcement during a press conference following the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House on Wednesday.

Despite the Minister’s refusal to provide the names of the companies involved, he stated that they will be revealed after the investigations are completed.

“There will be a major investigation to unravel everything. We need to get to the bottom of it before we can come back to tell you what will happen to the culprits,” the Minister said.

When asked if companies discovered to be responsible will be blacklisted, Sylva said that the government will not take any action until the root cause has been identified.

Concerning Nigerians whose automobiles were damaged after purchasing petrol, the Minister stated that their problem would be addressed.

“We know that some people’s vehicles must have been damaged, that is also going to the taken into consideration in dealing with the situation,” Sylvia said.
