After a high-rise building fell in the Ikoyi region of Lagos State, more individuals have been confirmed dead and more survivors have been rescued.

The event occurred on Monday afternoon along Gerrard Road in the nation’s economic heartland, according to Channels Television.

As of Monday night, four people had been killed and five others had been rescued, but the death toll and the number of survivors grew on Tuesday as rescue attempts proceeded into the night.

16 additional bodies have been recovered, according to a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Five more people buried in the rubble have been rescued by emergency services on the spot, he said.

This raises the overall number of people murdered and rescued to 20 and 10 so far.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, who visited the scene amid tight security, said that the government agency in charge of testing has sealed the premise of the collapsed building to allow for further inquiry into the structure’s stability.

Rescue efforts have been stepped up as additional persons are suspected to be buried beneath the rubble.
