The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been ordered to pay Dr. Monday Ubani, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law, NBA-SPIDEL, N12 million for his wrongful arrest and incarceration for 20 days in 2019.

Justice Sylvanus Oriji ruled on Wednesday that Ubani’s arrest and subsequent incarceration for 20 days were unconstitutional and a breach of his rights.

The judge, who ordered the EFCC to pay Ubani N12 million in damages, did not compel the anti-graft agency to apologize publicly for the unlawful imprisonment.

The EFCC arrested and imprisoned Ubani and Senator Christopher Enai on March 19, 2019, for failing to produce Ngozi Olejeme, the former Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, for whom they both stood as sureties.
