Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been a surprise target for Portuguese powerhouse Benfica in the January transfer window.
Jones has been in exile for the Old Trafford club and the approach by Benfica may be his escape route.
The 29-year old England international was struck by an injury that kept him on the sidelines for up to 20 months but only returned with the reserves in September 2021.
“I think as a footballer, as a person, as a human being, that’s the lowest I probably ever felt in my life” Jones said.
Jones joined United in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers and has gone on to make over 150 appearances for the club.
With United trying to establish a real force at the back having struggled for years, Jones’ departure may be ideal at the moment as he seeks playtime to boost his confidence.
